My One-Skein Knitted Hat

After learning to knit scarves I moved to the next challenge knitting a hat, and boy was I gong ho to do that.  My first attempt went pretty good, but I wanted to make it better, so I started over. and over again, finally I came to my senses, best to build technique by knitting plenty of hats than getting obsessed with my first, at that point I was able to complete the hat.

As I knit I am learning and understanding more like there is wrong and right side to some stitch such as the stockinette, this stitch is made up of one side that is knit and the other side that is purl.  This hat was done using the stockinette stitch but I liked the purl side better which is considered wrong side, also the purl side compliments my garter stitch scarf.

I used the free One-Skein hat pattern from suite 101 site, it very easy to follow, plus I already had the yarn and correct size needle. I was also motivated to have a hat with a knitted or crochet flower attached.

Royal Blue Diagonal Scarf

My next scarf project is completed, fresh from vacation on Nov 19th Shar gave me another challenge how about learning a new technique increasing and decreasing by making a diagonal scarf.

I was up for the challenge, plus with my limited experience, I was starting to understand that the less stitches I cast on and using a larger needle this project would knit up very quickly indeed.

My black Friday was spent trying to get more Bernat Royal Blue yarn for my scarf, the pattern from blog.nobleknits.com uses only one ball of yarn with a US 15 needle.  I used a different brand of yarn and a US 11 needle size that called for a bit more than one ball, to get the desired length scarf I wanted.

Knitting, Crocheting Notions and Stash

I have accepted the inevitable that I like knitting and a bit of crocheting so that means I will be buying notions and creating a bit of stash.

I bought some medium weight yarn for flowers making, additional crochet hooks, and knitting needle, I invested in the Clover Chibi darning needles that will work better than the elastic threader I was using prior, stitch markers which will help keep me on track when I advance to more complicated knitting projects, and I did not stop there I made some additional purchases.

While searching online for more info on knitting I came across this fabolous video on a brand of yarn by Red Heart Yarns called Boutique Sashay.  How could I resist learning how to knit with Sashay, I just love saying the word Sashay, Sashay. SashayYarn

I figure knitting is one of those skills if you do not use it you could lose it.  So should I take a break from knitting, and forget some of the technique, the I can't believe I'm knitting book will help …

Hexi Quilting Blocks April

I had gotten most of the prep work done on my April quilting blocks during the power outage so all I needed to do was sew them up. These blocks includes hexagon appliques, and they are hand sewn on to the background fabric.

I often wonder how the women of decades and centuries ago did it, sewing a quilt by hand, to repair a piece of clothing I can understand, but an entire garment, incredible.  Being taught this technique on Craftsy makes me really appreciate the work and effort they must have put in to make those heirlooms.

The instructor of Craftsy Block of the Month Amy Gibson teaches how to do the hand sewn version on the Hexi Stripes Block.  On the Sunny with the a Chance of Hexi block Amy teaches the machine sewn technique of applying the appliques, but she offers you the option to use either technique or other techniques for attaching the appliques if it suits you.

I liked the hand sewn so much I went with hand sewn on both blocks, call me crazy, because it does take a bit l…

Crocheting Flowers

At the end of the day after a busy day visiting museums I practice crocheting flowers. There are so many designs online, but I went with the one from Mom of 5 daughters site How to crochet flowers.  In addition to the videos, Mom of 5 daughters typed out the instructions making it much easier for me to take with me.

My first attempt came out very nice but with nine petals instead of eight petals, I only did two layers instead of three believe me when I say it was not intentional. My second attempt was much better with the right amount of petals and all three levels.

Smithsonian Expectation Met

I had a great trip in Washington DC saw the monuments and visited the Smithsonian museums, not all of them the place is immense.  Below I am modeling my scarf again, needed it on that day it was sunny but blistery cold.

It was a very fitting trip for me because the of the Abraham Lincoln movies right now, I did see the movie Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, I know I thought the same thing too, have they lost their minds, but it was a pretty good movie, I enjoy watching paranormal movies and I also enjoy the books.  Plus I read recently that there is new Lincoln movie staring Sally Fields and Daniel Day-Lewis, a really authentic period movie, I won't miss it.

I feel in tuned with the atmosphere of reflecting on a time past, and museums are filled with many things from times gone by, the entire trip was fun and exhilarating and the capital did not disappoint.

The Museum of American History had many special items one of them was this sewing machine the 1889 patent model by Jame…

Knitting Dream Come Through - Wine Garter Stitch Scarf

My garter stitch scarf is completed, I weaved in the tails of yarn that were hanging on the sides where I added more yarn and at the beginning and ending of the scarf.  I wore my scarf for the first time today on my trip to Washington DC, and it felt good, nice and warm.  I can only say there will be more knitting projects in my future.

Knitting Fever

Yes I have the fever for knitting, I even signed up for a Ravelry account, much knitting has been going on since my last post.  I had finished my first skein of yarn, how does one pronounce skein the online dictionary was very helpful, but I found another link at Crochet Spot website that answer the question in the most entertaining way, how do you pronounce skein.?

On Wednesday 11/7 I was ready to add in my second yarn, and Sharon suggested how about if I started the second yarn with a larger needle US 11, then I could work in my previous knitted yarn into the new.  I was a bit puzzled because it would not match in size I had used a size US 9 needle to create my practice knits.

No it would not match, and I also to grasp another important fact, I would need to unravel all my stitches from the practice knitting to work it into the new, NO..No..no, I felt like someone was trying to steal my slice of chocolate cake, and I held my first knitting in disbelief, I had spend many hours knit…

Knitting Practice

I am in a knitting frenzy, add four more hours of knitting last night and I completed my first yarn bundle (skein). I love information so if I am totally into a project, I seek tons of information to better understand the process, so I google continental knitting and found this lovely video from Knittinghelp.com I was able to get more details on the technique plus a little nursery rhyme to help me remember the direction my needle needs to go in.  After all that knitting I did notice that my knit stitch was getting much better..yippee.

Knitting First Scarf

The power is back on, so I can get back on track with my quilting, however during the power outage a result  of hurricane Sandy I decided I needed another creative outlet if I cannot sew, so I am learning to knit and this all started from a conversation I had last Thursday Nov 1, 2012.

I was motivated to teach myself to sew clothing, I have admired knitted items, but I was never motivated to teach myself to knit, like it was not going to happen ever..  So it took a Hurricane, No Power, and Sharon hearing me gripe again how I hate that the power was out because I cannot sew.

Shar shared with me that you can knit without power even by candle light, and she offered to teach me, WHAT did I hear correctly, she nodded her head yes I had heard correctly she will teach me how to knit, and not one to leave it up to chance Shar even promise to bring me supplies the following Monday.

Fortunately for me Sharon is a friend on the job, so I will be able to get tips and tricks very quickly an…
